Upgrading Discord roles

Discord's role feature covers create, edit, and assign. It doesn't split those apart, expire a role automatically, tie one to a payment, or log who changed what. DiscoRole adds the parts that are missing.

Sound familiar?

Problems you've probably already run into

You wanted a mod to assign one role

The only way to let them do that is Manage Roles — which also lets them delete or rearrange any role below it.

686 upvotes, still open after 5 years

Ten new members need the same role

After an event, a verification pass, a season reset — you're still clicking through people one at a time.

Requested for over 10 years

Your community runs more than one server

Keeping roles the same across them means redoing the same work by hand, every time.

That event role was only meant to last a week

Nobody remembers to remove it until someone asks why it's still there a month later.

A subscriber's payment lapsed, but the role didn't

Patreon's own Discord integration is known to miss this — people keep paid-role access after they've stopped paying.

You want to know who can actually manage roles

Checking who can actually manage roles means opening each role, one at a time.

This actually happens
"One of my admins deleted the bot roles on my Discord, and now new members can't see anything when they join. Is there a way to undo this?"

Discord role permissions can't be recovered once deleted.

What we're building

A narrower way to hand out role control

Vote for the feature you want us to build next.

Most wanted

Assign-only permission

Let specific people add or remove specific roles, without being able to create, delete, or rearrange any role.

Most wanted

Bulk assign and remove

Apply a role to a whole list of members at once, instead of one at a time.

Most wanted

Temporary roles

Set a role to remove itself automatically after a set amount of time.

Most wanted

Payment-linked roles

Grant a role when a member subscribes through Stripe or Patreon, and remove it automatically if the payment stops — the same automatic-removal mechanism as temporary roles, triggered by a payment status instead of a timer.

Most wanted

Audit log

Every role change is recorded with who made it and when.

Most wanted

Role requests

Let members request a role and have it approved, instead of assigning it yourself every time or leaving it fully self-serve.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Q. Is this available yet?

Not yet — it's in active development. This page exists to explain what we're building and hear from people dealing with this problem now.

Q. How is this different from Dyno, MEE6, or Carl-bot's self-assignable roles?

Those let members pick their own roles from a menu. DiscoRole is about the opposite direction — letting an admin safely delegate role-assignment power to specific moderators, without those moderators getting the full Manage Roles permission.

Q. Does this replace Whop, Patreon, or other paid-role tools?

No — DiscoRole doesn't process payments. It connects to the payment status you already have (Stripe, Patreon, and similar) and reliably handles the Discord role side: granting access when payment starts, and removing it when payment stops.

Q. Will my server need to grant new permissions?

Yes — like any bot that manages roles, DiscoRole needs the Manage Roles permission itself. The point is that your moderators won't need it directly; DiscoRole enforces the finer-grained rules on top.

Q. What will it cost?

Pricing isn't finalized. We're expecting a flat monthly plan per server, in line with what similar Discord bots charge, likely with a free tier for basic use.

Q. Can I get early access?

Use the chat in the corner and let us know about your server — we're talking to a small number of communities before opening this up more broadly.
